Why “Purple Carrots”? The Story Behind our Name
At Purple Carrots Drama Studio, people often ask us about our name. Why Purple Carrots? The answer carries a lot of meaning—especially within the disability community.
Purple carrots symbolize being different, not less. For centuries, carrots were naturally purple, but when the orange variety became more common, purple carrots started to seem unusual. And yet, their uniqueness didn’t make them less nourishing or less valuable—it made them special. This story is a beautiful metaphor for the disability community, where difference should be celebrated, not diminished.
Our name reflects this belief. At Purple Carrots, we see difference as a source of richness, strength, and value. This idea has deeply shaped our values and the way we practice theatre and the arts together.
How Purple Carrots Shapes our Values
The Arts
The arts are transformative. They empower us to see the world not only as it is, but as it could be. At Purple Carrots, we use theatre, music, and creative expression to help participants connect with the world around them in empowering and transformative ways.
Play
We believe play isn’t just for children—it’s an essential part throughout our life. Play brings rejuvenation, sparks imagination, and builds creativity at every age. In our studio, play is a way to grow, explore, and discover new possibilities.
Fun & Joy
We create joy together. Whether it’s through a performance, a moment of laughter, or a creative breakthrough, we embrace what makes us feel happy, excited, and alive.
Belonging
Everyone deserves to feel accepted, welcomed, and celebrated. Belonging means honoring unique strengths and knowing that every voice has a place in the circle.
Empathy
Instead of simply showing compassion, we practice empathy—seeking to understand one another’s thoughts, feelings, and perspectives. This helps every individual feel seen, heard, and valued.
Respect
Respect is foundational. We believe every person deserves kindness, understanding, and consideration, no matter what.
Inclusivity
Inclusivity isn’t just a goal—it’s a practice. We strive to create an environment where everyone can participate, contribute, and succeed.
Diversity
We view diversity as a powerful asset. Our differences in perspective, ability, and lived experience enrich us all and make our creative community stronger.
Community
Community is about connection and celebration. Through the arts, we help participants show up as their authentic selves while building a thriving collective.
Connection
Connection is at the heart of communication. We embrace all forms of expression—spoken, signed, written, performed, or digital—because what matters most is that every person feels understood.
Blooming Together
Purple Carrots isn’t just a name, it’s a philosophy. It reminds us that being different is a gift. At Purple Carrots Drama Studio, we carry that truth into everything we do. Our studio is a place where growth, creativity, and connection are cultivated, and where each individual can bloom in their own way. A place where you belong, with a cause to support. It’s a commitment to embracing difference, celebrating creativity, and building a community where everyone belongs.
